Trash 2 Treasure was started as part of the Nourish Community Business incubator - engaging with men, women, and grannies from the local impoverished and marginalised communities and villages around Acornhoek, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Nourish was started in 2011 with the goal of bringing holistic community development to rural communities, and finding sustainable projects that would address the dual issues of poverty and poaching. The Business Incubator focuses on assisting and creating a spirit of entrepreneurship in these communities, of being proud of skills and resources, instead of feeling victimised by "lack"and poverty.

Under the Nourish Business Incubator - Trash 2 Treasure was born, with the aim of identifying and training local crafters & artisans, and assisting in the marketing & selling of their products to the local and international tourism trade. Believing that unlocking sustainable income and making tourism-spend locally relevant is one of the ways for long term community development and poaching reduction. We have crafters that we work with, building capacity and teaching business skills, while empowering them to see waste as a resource, and not only create conventional curios, but custom made, unique and special handmade African items, that a tourist would like to take home as a memento. We also appreciate local heritage and aim to keep those crafting skills alive through Trash to Treasure.
